Biografia


O grupo foi fundado em 1986 por Guru (então conhecido como Keithy E. The Guru), DJ 1,2 B Down, Mike Dee e vários produtores, como Donald D, J.V. Jonhson ou DJ Mark the 45 King contribuindo por fora. Em 1987 e 1988, Gang Starr lancou três 12" singles em vinil pelo lendário selo Wild Pitch Records.

Em 1989, o grupo dividiu-se e o único membro disposto a continuar sob o nome Gang Starr foi Guru. Ele logo entrou em contato com DJ Premier (então conhecido como Waxmaster C), DJ Premier lhe enviou uma fita com batidas (beats musicais) que aparentemente Guru gostou. Convidando DJ Premier para juntar-se ao recém-fundado grupo, e no mesmo ano lançaram seu primeiro single "Words I Manifest" junto com "No More Mr. Nice Guy" (1989). Nessa linha, o duo trabalhou junto em seis álbuns, e um disco duplo "Greatest Hits", além de inúmeros singles e colaborações em trilhas sonoras. Outra compilação "Greatest Hits" foi lançada após a saída do grupo do selo Virgin.

Durante sua carreira, Gang Starr foi dos pioneiros do som Hip Hop da cidade de Nova Iorque. Os álbuns, especialmente "Step In The Arena"(1991), "Daily Operation" (1992), "Hard To Earn" (1994) e "Moment Of Truth" (1998), que são bem respeitados pelos críticos e "cabeças" do Hip Hop. A Faixa "Jazz Thing", apresentada na trilha sonora do filme de Spike Lee: Mo' Better Blues, ajudou a popularizar o Jazz Rap.

Morte de Guru

Após meses com sua saúde debilitada, Guru faleceu em 20 de abril de 2010, por complicações de um câncer.
